Grief Support

The world has changed. Our mission hasn’t.

As you navigate the difficult experiences that come with grief and end of life, Wellspring is here to offer support. A variety of services and resources are available to aid in your healing journey, whether you’re looking to join a support group or access grief books and podcasts.

How to Maintain Self Care While Grieving

While it can be difficult, prioritizing self care during times of grieving is important to maintaining your physical and emotional health. Taking note of the following steps can help ensure you’re meeting personal needs while processing a loss:

  • Participate in familiar activities. Try to engage in hobbies you enjoyed before loss, whether it’s doing a puzzle or reading a book, to remind yourself of the pleasures of your daily life.
  • Keep a journal. Making a habit of writing about how you’re feeling can help organize your thoughts and release pent-up emotions.
  • Spend time with others. It can be easy to isolate yourself while grieving, but surrounding yourself with friends and family can be uplifting and refreshing.
  • Feel your emotions. Some emotions can be difficult to process, but it’s important to avoid bottling up your feelings. Instead, practice letting them out as they arise.
  • Move your body. Physical activity can help reduce stress and relieve emotional pain by refocusing your mind on health and wellness.
  • Rest often. Be gentle with yourself and listen to your body’s needs. If you’re feeling tired or drained, give yourself the space to rest and recharge.
  • Seek out grief support. Engaging grief-specific organizations and with people who are experiencing similar struggles can help you feel less alone in your healing journey.

History

We’ve been serving people since 1893. Since that time, we’ve walked alongside generations of people of all ages and walks of life. We’ve built more than a deep history. We’ve built a legacy of trust across Michigan. Through that trust, we have adapted to a world that is constantly changing. We’ve rethought and restructured our core competencies to ensure we never lose sight of our own purpose of sharing hope when circumstances may not feel hopeful. We do that one person at a time, which impacts one family at a time. And in turn, that has the power to transform one community at a time.

While some of the care we provide families is reimbursed by insurance or state contracts, we also go above and beyond to care for the whole person. Your donations help us provide critical support like our chaplain program, music therapy, bereavement camps, prom dresses, senior pictures, emergency relief, etc. Through our annual fund, we can meet the needs of our clients and residents immediately because we have the funds readily available.

Support

The world has changed. Our mission hasn’t.

Financial Support

Financial gifts are used to offset the cost of items not covered by insurance, including chaplain services, activities, camp, art and music therapy, outings and much more. If you'd like to make on online contribution to support the programs of Wellspring Lutheran Services, please use the secure form below.

The Foundation

The Wellspring Lutheran Foundation is unique. It is our goal to be as transparent as possible with the work we do, so you, as a supporter of our mission, can be a part of this journey with us ... every step of the way.

Throughout our website, you will see the stories of people we serve. It is through their stories that you can see how your gift has made a lasting impact on each one of their lives. The truth is, all of the things that make Wellspring special come through the support of people like you – people who care about our mission, get involved, and help us find new ways to offer encouragement to some really incredible people.

Whether you are a volunteer, first-time supporter or long-time friend, you are making a difference in the lives of people all around you. Together, we look forward to living out our vision.

Ways to Give

Monthly Giving Options

Our Wellspring teams often meet someone on one of the most difficult days of their lives. More often than not, they are in crisis and need immediate intervention/services. Thank you for considering a monthly investment. We are confident your support will help change lives, strengthen families and transform communities.

Wellspring Annual Fund

We couldn’t do this important work without your support. So, we are so grateful you are here to research how best to support the mission of Wellspring.

Each year, we serve more than 10,000 children, families and seniors in Michigan.

If you are interested in making an unrestricted gift to the annual fund, please donate today.

Executive Team

  • Dave Gehm

    Dave Gehm

    President & CEO

    Joined Wellspring in 1990

“As a young(er) man, I committed my life’s work to serving people.  I saw Wellspring’s mission as an expression of that commitment, and a way to align my personal faith with the powerful work of this organization. After three decades, the mission of Wellspring has proven timeless for me, even though the work is always changing, adapting and adjusting to the needs of the people we serve.  Most compelling for me each day is the incredibly talented, passionate and committed people of Wellspring. They show up every day to change lives and serve people. I always want to show up for them!”

  • Jill Haiser

Chief Marketing & Human Resource Officer

    Joined Wellspring in 2008

“This has never been a job to me. You don't look into the eyes of a child, resident or family who needs you and forget about the responsibility of what it means to truly show up for them. You carry their stories in your spirit. I know that they trust us to get it right — and that trust is something I never want to take for granted. I can't imagine a life more fulfilling than watching people recognize the Hope that lives inside of them and then witness them walk in that Hope with so much intention and purpose.”

  • Maria Kern

    Maria Kern

    Executive Assistant

    Joined Wellspring in 2000

“For more than 20 years I have appreciated the opportunity to make a difference in people's lives through my work. It has been a privilege to be part of the changes and growth of the organization during my time here.  Witnessing the resilience, dedication and compassion of my coworkers during the pandemic has made me even more appreciative of Wellspring and the care we provide to those we serve.  I look forward to seeing where God leads us in the future.”

  • Jason Sroufe

Vice President of Operations & Chief Operating Officer - Child & Family Services

    Joined Wellspring in 2006

“The moment I read the job posting to join this organization as a families first worker, serving families whose children were at-risk of removal to foster care, I felt that I would fit at our organization. It certainly has proven to be true! Since 2006, I have had the privilege to serve families throughout many of Wellspring’s programs and divisions and to see countless lives changed and families strengthened over the years. It is an honor to support the employees who work at Wellspring and have dedicated their lives to helping and serving others. I truly believe that I work with many of the kindest and caring individuals in the world.”
